Last week my family and I decided to take a little impromptu vacation. Our youngest daughter was on spring break, we could work remotely for a week or so, off we went. We got on the phone on a Saturday evening, and by that Tuesday we found ourselves in Southeast Florida. After the unusually cold and snowy winter we had experienced at home in Ocean City, Maryland, we found the 60 degree temperatures to be positively balmy. It even moved to the upper 70’s as we went through the week.

As many do in today’s work force, we find ourselves working wherever our travels may take us, and it proved no different on this little get away. It always seems that when we go away we get even busier for some reason (hmmmm…maybe I should leave more often), ah but I digress. The reason for my penning this is because of a wonderful experience my husband and I had during our trip. Now I am a relative newbie in this world of social media, but I do enjoy engaging with others on my blog, twitter, and at facebook. In my many conversations with people, I have noticed that you can tell the personalities of those that communicate well on these sites. Some you will share common work interests, parental concerns, similar charitable organizations, etc, and if you are lucky enough, you can also sense a kindred spirit. Well I had that feeling about this lovely real estate agent/architect in the Miami area. Her name is Ines Hegedus-Garcia.

On impulse, I dropped a tweet her way that we were in the area, and typical of Ines she responded very promptly. I am sure that she is very busy person as a wife, mother and with her career, but she was kind enough to say, “Sure let’s get together”. We had only met briefly FTF (face to face), at a RE Bar Camp in Philadelphia in May 2009, and I doubt, at that time, that she even remembered that when she responded to my tweet.

We met at the lovely shops of Bal Harbour in the Northern Miami area. Kind of déjà vu for me, since I had went to college in Miami Springs and had some history in that area, but had not been back for many years.

Well you know when you start to talk to somebody and you just can’t shut up because you seem to have soooo much to say to each other? That’s how it went. I felt like I had known her for years. She is a beautiful person on the inside and outside, and we babbled and babbled. My husband, who is usually very quiet, was also very engaged in the conversation. Two hours went by and it seemed that we had just started talking. I knew she had family to get home to, and many other things to attend to. We were on vacation, she was in the middle of a very busy day I am sure.

We said our so-longs, not good byes, I know I will see her again. I am so very glad that she took the time to meet with us, and I kind of knew that we were going to hit it off like that. Trust your instincts when you are “chatting” on the net. The genuine ones come off that way and you can feel it. I was right about Ines!

It’s funny, probably Ines and I would never have had the opportunity to meet. Our geographic locations and differing backgrounds would most likely not have put us together at the same place at the same time. There are no more six degrees of separation in the world today with the advent of the web, it is sooo much closer then that. In this circumstance, I am very happy that was the case!

If you are driving into town over the Route 50 bridge, you’ll see young and old alike lined up on the bridge with their fishing poles dropped in the water. Or you just can just perch yourself on a jetty and cast your line into the sea. For those seeking a little more, there are many options available. You can rent a boat for a lazy day on the bay, or for those with a more serious challenge in mind, charter a local fishing boat to go offshore.

You can find out all the local information at the Ocean City Fishing Center.

The East Coast took quite a beating from a winter storm that moved through most of Saturday into Sunday morning. Many areas to the north and west of Ocean City were very hard hit with record amounts of snow. I was hoping for more of the white stuff, but alas, we didn’t get that much at the beach. You didn’t have to dig your car out from the parking lot at your condo.

We (hubby and I) did brave the frigid air Sunday and hit the boardwalk for our usual run. It was dramatically different that what we are use to. The wind chills were in the teens and our run was very short lived. In fact, we had to go down by the ocean front on the sand to run, because the boardwalk was too slippery. FYI, if you never ran on the sand it’s a much more challenging experience. Even if it is frozen sand.

Take a look at the boardwalk with some snow. I was amazed to see several stores and eateries open, and there was even a 3 person line at Fisher’s Popcorn and Thrasher’s french fries. Ahhh the power of food.

Stay warm my friends!

It gives me hope for the human spirit. From great sadness and tragedy comes great outpourings of generosity and kindness.

Horribly a home in the neighborhood where I live was burnt almost to the ground on Saturday. We stood by and watched as our local firefighters valiantly fought the blaze with such vigor. The shocked and scared faces of the neighbors was painful to watch. I could tell everyone’s thoughts around me were the same. That is so sad, and thank God that wasn’t my home. Hugs were shared, plans were made, but the family is ultimately devastated by their loss.

In the midst of the chaos a muffled sound was heard, it was the barely audible sounds of a dog barking. The homeowner had thought their puppy had run from the house and had yet to be found. But not true, the little dog was still trapped in the house. A fireman bravely went back inside, and within minutes brought the dog outside to its owner. We were all elated. I felt like crying. Now everyone was officially safe and sound.

I count my blessings to have such wonderful friends and neighbors. I applaud as loudly as I possibly can the hard work and efforts of our Ocean City, Berlin and Ocean Pines firefighters. They are an incredible hard working and efficient group of dedicated individuals that I am proud and privileged to have in our area to protect the citizens of Worcester County.
